Dry Ice Cleaning Machine Part

Situation:

We created a part for a dry ice cleaning machine from a large aluminum blank. It required considerable machine time to remove a significant portion of the metal.

Option:

In order to increase their competitive presence in the market, our customer asked us to review the machining designs in order to find cost reduction efficiencies.

Resolution:

Rather than start with a 12” diameter slug of aluminum, we suggested contracting a foundry to provide castings closer to the net shape, thereby eliminating machine cycle times. The customer instructed us to pursue this concept.

Effect:

We now buy the casting and then machine to finished dimensions. Although there was a small start-up cost, the cost savings have averaged well over 25% per part.
